I finally watched the infamous Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad. I didn't get it.

Never heard of it. Is it this?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfCiV6ysngU

Is all of the Internet at war over it? Thank goodness I don't use Facebook or Twitter and can be blissfully unaware of such things. But I suppose now I want to know what the problem is, since I have watched it and was not incensed.

Sure, I see that Pepsi is selling the notion that they are for peace and that drinking some more Pepsi promotes peace. And being a large multinational company, they probably don't actually have a good record on that. But... it's an advertisement. What else is new?

Or are the attacks from the other side because it has a Muslim woman and she's just a normal person and that how dare we normalize being Muslim in this Christian nation? Oh the possibilities.

The end of the ad is a reference to some photos (which went viral) of the arrest of Iesha Evans, a 28-year-old woman who travelled to Baton Rouge for a Black Lives Matter protest after the unprovoked shooting of Alton Sterling by police. Pepsi clearly expected people viewing the ad to be familiar with Black Lives Matter protests. Only their fictional protest is sanitized -- the signs have no reference to actual issues on them, they just say LOVE; and the police are not in riot gear, which they pretty much have been non-stop for protests of the kind depicted. So Pepsi looks pretty clueless and exploitative to people actually involved in the protests, or whose families and relatives have been abused by police. And the implication that a tense situation of this type can be defused by a cute white girl handing a police officer a can of Pepsi might seem funny and cute to Pepsi, but not really to people actually doing the work of protest or being shot or arrested or brutalized for no reason.
