The Egg and I (just down the block from French Meadow) is good, and doesn't usually have long waits. If you're willing to pay a bit extra, they have real maple syrup.
When I wanted serious hash browns (before I was low-carbing), I went to the Uptown Diner. I usually had to wait, but it was worth it. Haven't been there in a few years, though.
