Unemployed: the first week
Sep. 24th, 2003 12:40 pmMonday was a downer - still working my way through the slightly embarrassing process of notifying the same people that I had recently bragged to about my new job that I no longer have it. Applied online for Unemployment - a little unsure what next step is. I think now I wait for something to come back to me in the mail? Despite all the online info I could not determine whether my lump sum severance amount counts as 4 weeks of severance (based on the amount) or one week (based on being disbursed in a single payment). Sent out emails, updated my job-hunt spreadsheet, submitted a few longshot online resumes to companies that aren't hiring but are willing to take resumes online.
Walked down to the Office Max at Nicollet and Lake to buy some whiteout, more for the exercise than anything. If nothing else, I'm trying to get at least one unit of exercise daily, taking advantage of the lovely fall weather whenever possible.
Amber called in the evening, and I called her back on my new cellphone so we could talk for free (whee!). We passed the phone around among the family until the battery started to falter. She's settled into an off-campus group house for her senior year, which should be lots of fun. Classwork a little frantic - she seems to be taking her usual over-heavy courseload. Hasn't found a job yet, and was a little alarmed to find that I no longer have one either. Eh, a little shock now and then is good for college students. Maybe I'll wait a few weeks and then start calling HER for money. *heh*
Tuesday was an upbeat day. DavE came over for a visit - I made him one of my signature avocado sandwiches and we talked about job-hunting strategies. Barb called and we went for a bike ride - through the local streets so we could ride side by side and talk. Then "Minnehaha" took me out for dinner, bless their sweet hearts! Hmmm. I realize that I haven't the slightest idea how to make somebody else's LJ name turn into that cute little link and icon. Could somebody send me a hint on that?
It was a lot of fun. We tried out the Vin Cave, which I guess qualifies as a wine bar. B picked out a bottle of wine, which I thought was excellent. Without the wine, I think the entree I had would've been a mite disappointing. It was definitely on the salty side. But starting with a bottle of wine tends to make anything that comes along with it more than satisfactory. And of course, good company makes everything wonderful. Thanks, guys! It did cheer me up.
After 5 days of job hunting, I have accumulated several promising leads and a couple of nibbles (callbacks), but no interviews scheduled. Nothing that makes me jump up and down in excitement, but enough to suggest that there are a few job openings out there.
