ambertatge came to visit, and I lost track of time. It was really nice to see her. She came home with a great desire to sew, which was handy since I'd just turned her room into a sewing room. We went fabric shopping together, and happened on a big pattern sale. She wanted to make a light tiered skirt; we picked out some white cotton with a subtle, barely visible silvery design on the surface. Got home and looked at the pattern more carefully - discovered that Butterick still uses the old measurements, which is about 3 sizes off from the typical store sizing these days, so all the patterns were the wrong size. Oops. So Amber learned how to add fabric to a pattern to resize it. Worked out perfectly. She finished the skirt just before she left, and it fit perfectly! I bought a bit of sheer black stuff with stars on it with the vague idea of making a Halloween costume with it. There wasn't enough on the bolt for a real pattern, so I just made a simple overskirt - guess I'll be a sorceress or something.
Wednesday night we had a big night out downtown - dinner at a fancy restaurant and a play:
Sylvia at the Pantages. Amber's old friend Dan joined us for dinner, and
thorintatge skipped the dinner but joined us for the play. I took Thursday and Friday off from work. On Thursday,
ambertatge and I visited Bodyworld at the Science Museum. I'd been meaning to go to that all summer, but couldn't find anybody to go with me. I thought it would be more interesting with a companion to point things out to, and it was. It's a huge exhibit - almost too much to take in at once. I wouldn't mind seeing it again. As expected, I found it fascinating.
Friday we got
ambertatge to the airport and the rest of the day was devoted to the memorial service and wake for Mike Ford. Although I wasn't a close friend of Mike's, I admired him and thought of him as a treasured member of our community. The memorial service was very moving, and I feel like I know Mike better now, in retrospect. A heartfelt thanks to all who shared their memories in the service, and on LJ as well. It is appreciated, even by those of us who have little to add.
