Richard on board the Wayward Sailor Richard on board the Wayward Sailor

Friday, July 3: a full day snorkel cruise with Cap'n Phil and two other couples. He took us to Greater St. James, an island between St. Thomas and St. John with an "island for sale" sign posted on it. They're asking $25 million, in case you're interested.

This is one tough old bird with a lot of stories to tell. He's been married 5 or 6 times, but loves his boat best of all. He's 70 years old and can still hold his breath for over a minute as he dives down to take pictures of his octopus friends.
Barracuda at Greater St. James Island Barracuda at Greater St. James Island

It's kind of startling the first time you encounter one of these, but they are completely uninterested in humans. Which makes them great photo subjects because they are imperturbable - they just hover there waiting for you to take their pictures. This one is not particularly large: 2-3 feet.
Nice shot of a doctor fish - St. James Island Nice shot of a doctor fish - St. James Island

A common and not particularly flashy coral fish. They zip around pretty quickly though, so it's a bit of a challenge to get a good clear picture like this.
Male striped parrotfish Male striped parrotfish

A pretty little parrotfish with subtle rainbow coloration. There are lots of them around the reefs, but it's rare to see a full-grown male. The females look completely different, monochromatic end to end stripes. I think this is one of those fish where the immature males resemble the female and only a few of the males develop to the full male coloration.
Trumpetfish - Greater St. James Island Trumpetfish - Greater St. James Island

I stalked this fish for about 15 minutes. It's very striking because of its shape, but hard to get a good picture of because it's so delicate and translucent. The weight belt definitely came in handy here.
