More fun with BPM
Nov. 23rd, 2010 11:38 pmOkay, now I can arrange my favorite songs by Beats per Minute. So now what? I guess the next step is to figure out how many steps per minute I take at different speeds. When I'm walking outside I walk about 3 mph, but on the treadmill my natural speed is 3.2-3.4 mph. If I really push myself I can do a minute or so at 4-4.2 mph. What I'm really trying to do with the treadmill is spend more time walking at the brisk but sustainable speed of 3.5-3.7 mph with brief sprints at 3.8+. I figure the right music program will make that easy once I figure out the relationship between Beats Per Minute and walking speed.
A brief experimental session at the Y yielded the following:
Blue Moon (128) 3.4mph
Jackson (130) 3.5 mph
Tennessee Jed (131) 3.6
Balloon-Alloon-Alloon (136) 3.8mph
Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes (140) 3.9mph
None of the songs I had on my iPod this evening took me up to 4mph, but it looks "The Monkey and the Engineer" or "Peggy Sue" should do it.
