Netflix and I have made up
Oct. 19th, 2011 05:49 pmThat whole unfortunate Qwikster episode is behind us now. I'm sure nothing like that will ever happen again.
* Movie of the Week (available streaming): Choose Me (1984). An odd, appealing little character study where LA starts to feel like a very small town. Kind of a very noir take on a French bedroom farce as it might have been directed by Robert Altman. It's actually directed by Alan Rudolph, features some very good actors and a compelling but slightly cheesy score. Once I started watching it I realized that I had seen it once before, but that didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying it a second time. Recommended to people who like this kind of thing (and you'll realize it fairly quickly if you don't).
* Latest TV series obsession (also available streaming): The Riches (2007-2008). No, I had never heard of it before either. A mighty peculiar FX series that was cancelled (like almost everything else I like) after 2 seasons. Since the Pilot just launches you right into it with no explanation, you might like to know that it's about a family of Irish Travellers, which is more or less Irish Gypsies. If you don't know about them, look them up on Wikipedia - fascinating. By the 2nd episode they've added an overlong introduction explaining this and recapping the rather tortuous series plot setup from the pilot. I'm already tired of the introduction, but I can see why they thought it was necessary. So far I'm captivated, although I still haven't figured out if it's supposed to be a drama or a comedy.
