We watched the Watchmen
Apr. 19th, 2009 09:50 pm... and it is brilliant. For the record, Richard had read the book (technically, the original comics before they were collected into a book) and I had not. Both of us loved it. It was dense and complex, but not particularly hard to understand if you were paying attention. Richard thought it was very true to the original. Apparently there was a change in the details of the way the ending played out, but Richard didn't think it made much difference to the basic idea.
It's a very long movie, but I never lost interest for a moment. This is particularly amazing since I am typically bored by lots of action scenes and special effects, both of which this movie has plenty of. But the pacing is so good and the action so well choreographed that it held my interest throughout. The acting is extraordinarily good, especially the Comedian (who gets an awful lot of screen time for a dead guy) and Rorschach (who actually starts to grow on you after a while, against all odds).
