Still writing about the most exciting thing that has happened to me this year - cleaning my office. After I rearranged everything, the little stereo set I was using to connect speakers to my computer was suddenly in the way. It's a cheap cube-shaped tuner/tape-player/turntable, of which I was only using the tuner component, so I've been on the lookout for a tuner that wasn't so tall.
Yesterday I found what I was looking for at the Linden Hills neighborhood sale - an ugly old Kenwood KR-2120 stereo receiver. At $2 the price was a little too good (usually this kind of thing is closer to $10, if it works, so I figured something was wrong with it), but I've been looking for 3 weekends and this was the first one I'd found so I took the chance. Strapping it to the back carrier of my bike was a job, but I managed to get it home without dropping it on concrete. Turns out that the backlight on the tuner dial is burned out, which makes it a little bit tricky to tune in. But I mostly listen to one station all the time anyway, so no big deal.

Plugged it in, turned on the radio - Yow! What an improvement! I popped a CD into my computer and played that - same thing - big booming sound (at a volume setting of 3). Now I understand why audiophiles are always bragging about how many watts their amplifiers have. I had no idea it made such a difference!
