Contacts and Calendar are both pretty weak as standalone apps. Unlike the Palm OS equivalents, these seem to be designed/intended as "read-mostly" mirrors of the "real thing" which is kept elsewhere (Outlook/Address Book/MobileMe, Outlook/iCal/MobileMe/Google Calendar). I had a number of comments on them earlier this year (note that I wrote that several months before Apple released the 3.0 OS, so some of the broken bits are now less broken).

For my usage pattern, Contacts works pretty well (since my master list has been in Address Book for a few years now) and Calendar...well, it doesn't completely fail. Sigh.

The unfortunate truth is that Apple hasn't had a real PDA since the Newton, and doesn't seem to have figured out how to make that part as good as even the Palm OS was 10 years ago.
