The two topics don't have anything to do with each other, but they both start with M.

Movies. Periodically I develop a strange craving for rental movies, and start renting two or three a week from my local Video Update. I seem to be heading into one of those spells, where I enjoy almost everything I rent. Princess Caraboo - even though I'd seen it before, it just blew me away this time. Space Cowboys - hardly one of the all-time greats, but loads of fun. Clint Eastwood is entirely underappreciated as a comic actor. Good Will Hunting - even the sappy ending didn't ruin it for me, although I did find myself hoping the kid had notified his boss before he drove off into the sunset. (I wonder, is it purely an American frontier convention that the Promised Land always lies to the West, and getting the call to head west excuses everything?). Matt Damon did a terrific job with that role - was that really his first major movie? He's wonderful. Oddly enough, I didn't sense much chemistry between legendary buddies Affleck and Damon, but the chemistry between Matt Damon and Robin Williams really mad the movie. Catch Me if You Can, my latest. A delightful movie. Makes you want to run out and buy a pilot's uniform immediately. Be sure to get the DVD version and watch the interviews with the real Frank Abagnale. As usual, the romance and the more sensational details of the story were Hollywood fabrications, but it's amazing how much of the movie was true to life. I don't know what to rent next. Ideas, anybody? Movies that are old enough to be out of the New Rentals section would be preferable.

Memorial Day Weekend. I'm not doing anything. Not visiting family, not going Up North, not going to Wiscon. After 3 weeks at a new job I was looking forward to a completely vegetative 3-day weekend. But here it is only the second day and... I'm bored. I guess that's a good sign - maybe the continuous stress of The New Job is finally wearing off. I found some old jewelry at yard sales yesterday and spent pretty much the whole day making jewelry, fixing old necklaces and making earrings to match them, gluing rhinestones into old brooches, etc. Today I adjusted the height of the hammock chair in the backyard so I could read the paper outside and then put the screens on the kitchen window, but I still need MORE excitement! Maybe I'll go see the Matrix Reloaded tonight.
