MixMeister is totally free and you don't have to tap. I'm just using the tapping utility to check/correct the results that MixMeister comes up with automagically. I'm enjoying playing with it because it's making me listen to my music more intently.
I'm still a little baffled by exactly what BPM means. It is not the same thing as tempo, although they obviously overlap. In some songs there are clearly two beats per measure that need to be counted (as in "These Boots Are Made for Walking.") But in other songs you really only pay attention to the first beat in the measure.
Maybe it's the difference between a song that is in 2/4 time as opposed to one in 4/4. Maybe it just has to do with the way the drummer plays the song. Or maybe it's all in the individual reaction to the song.
