It's been almost 2 months since Lena abruptly learned to pull herself to standing, push up to sitting, roll over, and crawl. At the time, this pretty much completed all her life goals in the space of one hectic week. Now she can spend her days churning around from one piece of furniture to another, standing up, reaching over her head to grab anything that might be up there, and then plunking herself down to play with it. Learning to walk doesn't seem to be on her agenda. If she wants to get someplace she plops down and crawls. Since she's a very fast crawler, and standing up and sitting down is part of the fun, this works fine. This picture, taken just a month ago, shows the stand-up-and-explore portion of the procedure. At this point she was standing firmly on flat feet and only needed one hand for support, but nobody had ever seen her stand unsupported.

But in today's Skype session, I suddenly saw a baby on the verge of walking, even if she doesn't realize it yet. Her balance has gradually improved to the point where she only needs a light touch on any handy object to stay upright, even when she is twisting this way and that to look at stuff. Sometimes she just lets go and stands for a second or two without appearing to notice. Last week I thought I saw her try to stand up in the middle of the floor before remembering that she doesn't know how to do that yet. This week she did that same move over and over, balancing in a half-crouch (one knee and one foot) and rocking back and forth. I think she is more interested in finding a new way to stand up than in actually walking. But I wouldn't be surprised if she took her first steps before she turns 10 months.

She's also suddenly started to babble. She's always been very vocal, but mostly it's just been variations on "Aaaaaah" punctuated by the occasional shriek. Last week she seemed to be trying to break into adult conversations with unusually emphatic moduluted AaaahAAAHaaahAAHAaaaah sounds. This past week she's finally started with the mamamama  bababababa gagagagaga dododododo stuff. You know, baby babbling. She gave me a long string of mamamamama and a big smile before reaching up and trying to disconnect the Skype camera.

Thanks for the encouragement.
In case you missed my earlier posts (you were planning a wedding reception at the time), here's a link to a selection of pictures we took during our recent trip, quite a few of which are Baby Lena shots.
