I don't normally care about sports, but really, this is just too good to ignore. Who would name a pro sports team "The Penguins?"  Do you suppose it was all part of a long, long game with even longer odds? Name your hockey team "The Penguins" solely in the hopes that one day they would play The Sharks ... and unexpectedly WIN? If so, bravo!

I do feel a little bad for Sharkie, though. When I was visiting San Jose, Sharkie was everywhere. I've never seen a city get so much mileage out of their sports mascot. One suspects that if the team dropped out of existence, Sharkie would soldier on without it. He even has his own website (which barely acknowledges the hockey team that he allegedly represents). There are fancifully decorated Sharkie statues all over town. I've even met Sharkie, who dropped in for a visit at the inner city school where I was volunteering. My granddaughter has a Sharkie-theme stroller. A peculiar mascot for a land-locked city, but an altogether successful one.

But now Sharkie won't be able to show his jagged-toothed face around town. Defeated by penguins! The humiliation!

Can't quite imagine what a Sharkie-themed stroller would look like? Well, like this.
