Oh, c'mon people

Most of the time, national news reports from reputable media outlets seem plausible enough, but ever notice how when you are actually in the middle of the news story you realize that they have a tendency to propagate nonsense? Yes, there are terrible, scary fires ravaging Oregon right now. Yes, some towns have burned right up, a few people have lost their lives, and a lot of people have been evacuated. But there is a pretty big damn difference between 500,000 people (12% of Oregon population!) "have fled from their homes" and 500,000 people are included in the 3-tier system of EVACUATION ALERTS.
The number of people that has actually been evacuated is apparently about 40,000. That's close to 1% of the population of Oregon, which is startling. But not 12% as all the major news outlets were reporting earlier today, and some still are. Shame on you, CBS. You were just repeating garbage that you picked up from other sources all day, so how about copying those same news sources and updating to the real number now?
