I keep seeing statements like Republicans eke past Democrats in turnout on first day of Florida's early voting and Early Voting Analysis: Huge Turnout By Democrats and Both Parties Fret as More Democrats Request Mail Ballots in Key States.

HOW DO THEY KNOW THAT?

I requested an absentee ballot and did not have to indicate a party affiliation in order to get one. The only information requested on the signature envelope is name and Driver's License Number. I know that in some states you have to declare a party affiliation when you register to vote, but that is not true in Minnesota (or many other states). Are there states where you have to specify a political party when you request an absentee ballot? That kind of sabotages the whole idea of "secret ballot," doesn't it?
