Read it here: meddlesome do-gooders interfere with the laws of natural selection in La Crosse! The remarkable thing about this ordinance is the modesty of its scope. It doesn't close any bars, or limit the hours, or even ask bartenders to do a better job of checking ID. It just makes it mildly illegal to get so drunk that you stagger into the river and drown (or even look like you're about to do so). It's not entirely surprising that students are outraged by this draconian crackdown, but I do find it startling, even in Wisconsin, that the state tavern owners' association opposes it. Isn't the hospitality industry supposed to at least pretend to be in favor of "drinking responsibly?"

Note that the penalty for anybody actually tagged under this ordinance is to attend an alcohol education class. Presumably the curriculum will consist of learning the La Crosse Drinker's Mantra ("Walk uphill!")

In other news, "A man and woman fell overboard from a cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico early Sunday, but both were rescued after a 4-hour search.... " UW-La Crosse graduates, perhaps?

Ya know, you're one of the few people who can put a note of glee into the phrase "meddlesome do-gooders".

Or at least I'm readin' that into it...
