As it turned out, the weather was beautiful all day long - I don't think the temp ever made it into the (predicted) 80's and the humidity dropped throughout the day. If anything, it was a little chilly on the parts of my ride that run along lakefront. In fact, it was so lovely by the lakes that I took the slightly longer path home from the Midtown so I could ride along Calhoun and Harriet. I rode at record speed, averaging a whole 10.4 mph! Then I collapsed, unexpectedly exhausted. I was more tired than after the first time I rode to work. Probably because I rode faster and with almost no breaks. Still, I somehow expected to be feeling so much stronger than I was last week and was surprised when I wasn't.

At least I recovered quickly. It's the next day, and I feel fine. My back's a little stiff and sore, but then it almost alway is for one reason or another. If I don't exercise it's a different kind of stiff, but about equally uncomfortable.

You and I had such different perceptions of the weather yesterday. I got home, dripping sweat (well, I had on the light jacket I had needed for going into work at 7 in the morning or so) and the numbers on my TV screen said 90 degrees. I found this totally credible. Then the live meteorologist contradicted the screen and said it was more like 80. Still dripping sweat, I went outside and got the lawnmower and did a pretty good job on the back yard -- but then I was almost weak from the exertion and the heat. I think I'm glad I haven't been trying to bicycle (admittedly a non sequitur, but a true statement).

It actually feels cooler when you're biking because of the air moving past you. And there is a breeze off the lakes in the evening that has a real chill to it, especially this early in the season. When I started home at 6:30 pm my favorite weather site (weather.com) said it was 79. It felt much cooler than that, especially as I pedaled up the west side of Shady Oak Lake in the early part of the trip home. I seriously considered stopping to put on a scarf, but it's not a terribly big lake, and the chilly breeze disappeared as soon as I was past the lake. It was just about perfect biking temperature, imho.

Today is much warmer than yesterday. I just went out for a walk, and I definitely found myself detouring around to stay in patches of shade wherever I could.
