I see that other people are posting LOOOONNNGGG posts to LJ, but I still can't post anything longer than a short paragraph. Is there some kind of trick to it?

My little theory is that they've blocked anyone who previously made long response posts from doing so again until the DDoS is resolved. I don't know how true that is.

I write posts and then upload them to LJ. If you've been writing directly in LJ, try doing this instead.

This.
I also use the Semagic client for Windows, which is a lot easier to use (especially if you link a lot, which I do) than the "Post to Journal" page.

My best guess is that step one is "exist in the right portion of their database." Which is unfortunate if true.

Same here. I can't even post the results of the weirdness meme.

I just tried downloading an LJ client and posting a longer post from that - and it worked! I found the client here: http://www.livejournal.com/download/

When I'm posting from work I post from LJ directly. At home I use the Semagic client over Windows XP. The results are exactly the same. Short posts usually go through, anything longer than a short paragraph gets a server timeout. It doesn't make any difference whether it is a response post or a journal update.
