It seems like I've promised a few people lists of my favorite podcasts, including poor [livejournal.com profile] vgqn , laid-up after foot surgery. Here's a quick list. You can find them all by searching iTunes (or presumably with Google or Podcast Alley or whatever rings your chimes.) You don't have to own an iPod to listen to them - you can listen on your computer. iTunes sure does make it easier to manage your podcasts, though.

Comedy:
------------------------------------------------
Tekdiff (mostly one-man sketch comedy in the general tradition of Firesign Theater)
Comedy4cast (comedy in 4 minutes... or less)
Clever Little Pod (scripted British comedy nonsense every fortnight)

Old Time Radio - my favorites are Sherlock Holmes, Boston Blackie, Halls of Ivy, and any horror/suspense show
------------------------------------------------
The OTR Podcast
Adventures in Radio Podcast

Current events, popular culture, technology, medicine
------------------------------------------------
APM: Future Tense
NPR: It's All Politics
Slate Magazine Daily Podcast (particularly the weekly Political Gabfest)
PRI: To the Best of Our Knowledge
WNYC's Radio Lab - brand new, and terrific.
Sound Medicine - weekly tidbits of medical news
NPR: Wait, wait.... Don't Tell Me! (the NPR quiz show!) - one of my absolute favorites
Discovery Channel Features - highly variable - I strongly recommend "The Real Eve," "Cash Cab," and "I Shouldn't be Alive."

Human Interest Stories
------------------------------------------------
This American Life - a perpetual favorite
The Story - [livejournal.com profile] pegkerr turned me on to this one
WGBH Morning Stories - short and sweet, a nice change from the others in this category which are 30-60 minutes each
Street Stories (Australian Radio)

Modern Fiction (read and/or dramatized)
------------------------------------------------
Claybourne (a serialized science fiction horror soap opera from New Zealand - don't miss this one!!)
The Radio Adventures of Doctor Floyd - aimed at kids, but still funny to adults. Short, serialized episodes.
Escape Pod (consistently good science fiction stories, most of them new)
Pseudopod (sister broadcast to Escape Pod, specializing in horror stories)
The Sonic Society (all sorts of stuff, some very good, some awful)
Sonic Fiction (limited number of episodes, variable quality)

Interview and Miscellaneous
------------------------------------------------
Shockwave
Uncomfortable Questions

Okay, that's pretty much the list. After taking a look at my tastes, anybody have any others to suggest? (note that I have no interest in music podcasts, so please don't suggest those.) I'm particularly interested in finding some more intelligent sketch comedy and good radio drama (old or new). iTunes doesn't even have categories for those things, which makes it hard to locate. I wish I could find something else like Claybourne, but that one seems to be pretty much one of a kind!
