The restaurant is at 50th and Bryant, right next to the Malt Shop. It's called the Blackbird Cafe. It's yet another of those charming little neighborhood bistros that have been popping up all over. Like the Grand Cafe, Cafe Ena and God knows how many more, Blackbird serves a limited menu of imaginative, tasty dishes attractively presented in a charming one of a kind space, with maybe a coffee bar off to the side.

Blackbird's coffee bar is also a wine bar, and it's front and center in the airy little storefront along with a handful of tiny tables. However, there are larger, more private tables towards the back of the bigger-than-it-looks restaurant, with one particularly romantic table location back by the antique fireplace. The lunch menu is mainly sandwiches. I had a really delicious turkey sandwich with provolone cheese and pinenuts on some kind of special bread they call a "Pullman Loaf," homemade fries and a bottomless glass of iced hibiscus tea. Yum. Came to about $10 plus tip. Some sandwiches are also available at dinner time, along with some fairly expensive but interesting entrees. Dinner looks like it would be about $25 per person, more with wine. So it's not exactly cheap, but certainly a good alternative to lunch at the Malt Shop.

The other items came from yard sales.

The Blackbird Cafe sounds like it's worth a visit. What kinds of dinner entrees are we talking?

Oh, stuff like "Panko crusted salmon served with soy dipping sauce and fries." (No, I don't know what "panko" is either). Here's a link to an abbreviated version of their menu.

It's more expensive than it looks, because all side dishes have to be ordered ala carte. They do serve some of their luncheon sandwiches at night, though. And the cheapest thing on the menu, the fried liver salad, has gotten rave reviews (believe it or not).

This would be a fun place for a dinner expedition next time we have a Minnstf meeting on this side of town.

Panko is a Japanese style of bread crumb. It's kinda oblong in shape and mildly sweet in taste.

A dinner expedition sounds fun. The curried lamb balls sound especially good to me.

Blackbird went in fairly recently, it takes the place of a Caribou coffee that was in that location (I guess their business took a hit once a Caribou went in the same block as Kowalski's off of Lyndale down there).

We keep meaning to try Cafe Ena and Blackbird; also want to get to My-T-Fine more often-- we're worried 'cuz they've shortened their hours (no longer do evening dinners).

Anyway, good to hear your reports on Ena and Blackbird!

I didn't realize they did dinners. In fact, I thought they were mostly a coffee and pastry kind of place. I recall stopping in there once looking for sandwiches and they didn't have any actual food.

Are they open on Sunday evening? Richard and I like to go out to eat Sunday evenings, and we're trying to visit more neighborhood restaurants.
