Got a job!

Oh, yeah. The reason I'm backing out of the comics obsession phase is because I have a new job (started this past week, actually). The company is between names at the moment, which is a little awkward. The official name is now Cassatt, but my email address is still sharon@unlimitedscale.com. It looks like it'll be fun, but I was a little nonplussed when I showed up for my first day and discovered that they had no office supplies at all, no wastebaskets, no telephone system ("We all had cell phones, so we figured, why bother?") and very little heat. There was a computer on my desk, however. Geeks.

Cassatt is a startup (never would've guessed that, right?) whose mission in life is to take a cluster of Linux machines and make it act as much as possible like a super-computer. These people all used to work together somewhere else - guess where? Give up? The answer can be found on their website, which is, until further notice, www.unlimitedscale.com.

I dunno - I guess the same thing any supercomputer would be used for. The point isn't that it's Linux. The point is that any arbitrary number of inexpensive computers much like the one that sits on your desk at home can be grouped together to produce a computing machine of any size and power that the user desires. Also, that you can start small and add power as needed, rather than having to predict when you buy the computer how big a computer you need to buy.

Hmm.I can see where that could be an advantage to a lot of small businesses and start-up businesses that would want to add computing power as they grow.
