Well, it turns out the compressor was fine. The fridge wasn't working because the fan wasn't turning. The fan wasn't turning because it was embedded in a block of ice. The ice was there because the drain tube had gotten plugged up.

In other words, it was essentially the same problem I had gone to the doctor for an hour earlier.

The solution in the case of the fridge was to melt the ice and clean out the drain tube. The fan motor had survived its ordeal, so no parts needed to be replaced at all. However, it took the nice young man about an hour to do all this, so it still cost about $200.

It sounds like the best way to prevent this from happening again is to do a better job of cleaning out the crud that accumulates behind the drawers on the bottom of the fridge compartment. The nice young man was too polite to volunteer this bit of information, but I dragged it out of him. We actually cleaned the shelves and drawers when we were checking for spoiled food earlier in the week, so the fridge wasn't in a state of totally embarrassing squalor, but we didn't wipe down the bottom of the compartment particularly well. I feel motivated to do that now.
