If I wanted to add more RAM to my 4-year-old computer, how would I know what kind to get?
This wasn't such a complicated question the last time I added RAM to a computer.

Can you pull out one of the RAM sticks and see what kind it is? That's probably the most foolproof method -- bring the stick along when you go shopping.

Try the memory configuration search at crucial.com; it usually works for me.

(I haven't tried the auto-detection thing, since it doesn't run on my various operating systems.)

I usually call up one of the online companies (eg zones.com) and be very specific about my system, and have them try to sell me memory. Which they sometimes do. This is how I recently added memory to my three year old computer (having found out the prices dropped precipitously from three years ago...).
