My new office building has a fancy workout room with lots of swell equipment. Yesterday I spent 30 minutes in there, first time since before the holidays. I guess I got a little overly enthusiastic, and strained several muscles, especially the ones in the lower back. Nothing really serious, but I'm in sufficient pain that I don't think I can manage exercising again today, even if I do something different like swimming.

So... anybody else having trouble with their New Years Resolutions?

Saw a web page yesterday about how many exercise machine exercises can actually have you doing the exercise in a way that is at best sub-optimal and at worst damaging to other things, particularly your back. I thought about forwarding it to [livejournal.com profile] drewan but promptly forgot and now my Google-foo is failing me in finding it again. It provided alternatives to the common machine exercises that were safer. If I can track it down from my browser history would you like me to send it to you?

Sure, why not? Might be something there I'd like to try.

Although in all honesty I think my problem was pretty simple: just using too heavy a weight for an exercise I hadn't done for quite a while. It's really easy to over-exercise your lower back. Unlike the larger muscles in the legs and arms, you don't feel the burn until it's too late. (I've done this before, with and without machines involved.)

Yeah. I actually got up and moved two days ago, for the first time this year. Yesterday I tried stretching. Trouble is, not only am I stiffer than ever, but when I try to stretch I find my larger-sized body is in the way. It's hard to bend over when parts of you are already there before you get bent.

On the other hand, we did, BOTH of us, get up and move. Kudos to us. On to tomorrow's battles.
