I am in the fortunate position where charity and "fun stuff" and savings are all usual stuff. But not everyone I know is so lucky. I'm seriously worried about one person in particular, but there are others who are on my lower-involvement worry list.

My answer to "Has your life been affected noticeably by high gas prices in the past year?" is really, "No, because I don't drive." I could afford it if I had to, though.

Same here; no car, no sticker shock at the gas pump.

I don't drive, and left that question unanswered.

I probably couldn't afford it if I had to.

If I had a steady dayjob I'd be looking into buying a house again, but I might be looking at waiting until I thought the housing prices weren't going to fall.

"The upside is we had a tree crash on our home this past summer..."

Some might say that if the upside of your year is having a tree fall on your house, it wasn't much of a year in terms of good news.

If you don't grow all your own food, you are affected by higher gas prices. If you buy anything that's transported by a gas powered vehicle, you are affected by higher gas prices. Maybe not a lot, but it's causing inflation.

I am furious about the "rebate". Where the hell is that money going to come from? It's not like Jesse's "we have a surplus" rebate. That money will add to the already enourmous national debt.

I know. It reads to me like the date-rapist leaving money on the dresser as he departs the room.

I didn't choose any option from the question about the high price of gas, because I have certainly noticed, but you didn't put in what I needed to check. The price of food is up. This is alarming me and it's affecting my plan to pay our debt down.

Rebate? I assume this is a Minnesota thing. Oregon has one, but it's built into the budget structure (in a ridiculous way, but that's a different story).

I can afford rising gas prices, but I'm concerned about our carbon footprint. I've believed for several years that anyone who can afford a reasonable new car (as in, 0 mileage and above the bare-bones vehicle) should pay the extra for a hybrid or other high-MPG choice. Whether it'll pay back in gas savings or not, we owe it to the planet to exercise the relatively easy options.

Practicing what I preach: M. drives a 2002 Prius. I need a new car soon, and I may go plug-in electric. It's one of those "I can, so I should": my commute is only 4.5 miles (pure chance: job 2 years; house location 11 years); in Portland a good heater isn't absolutely required; I'm fortunate that our household has another car for long trips.

"Rebate? I assume this is a Minnesota thing."

Haven't heard/read the news for the past week? There's an overnight National Economic Stimulus Package in the works, including a probable tax rebate of about $600/person. The talking heads have been chewing it over nonstop, which is what precipitated this poll.

I hadn't heard the term "rebate" when it first came up. I ignore news about things that might be coming (unless I think I can influence them), because there is plenty of idiocy that actually happens.

Note to self: whom do we know who is in danger of losing their house? Must ask.

Note to self: next time you feel moved to create a poll remember to include a "none of the above" response to each question to cover the option that you forgot to include. In this poll, the major omission was "No - I don't drive."
