Things don't look so promising today. Weather is brooding and drippy, and as of noon, the A/C didn't seem to be working at all in Bryant Lake Bowl.

I had vaguely planned to (maybe) meet [livejournal.com profile] barondave there for the noon show, elephant shoes, & olive juice; (mis) communication in a modern world

However, I couldn't find [livejournal.com profile] barondave, and realized 5 minutes into the show that the next hour and 15 minutes was going to be my idea of hell, so I left. It's probably a perfectly lovely show if you like that sort of thing, but I so emphatically do not like that sort of thing that I don't think I could have told the difference between and good and bad example of it. With the A/C not working and the fact that it's an over-long show anyway - I just couldn't take it.

The show seemed to be a mime show. Not the fun kind of mime, with people trying to get out of invisible boxes and walking against the wind. No, this is the pretentious high-concept type of mime, where somebody sits on a stage for 2 minutes with a simpering grin frozen on her face, then does something subtle with a tin can. Somebody else walks on stage, pauses for another 30 seconds, then does something else equally subtle. They both simper at the audience for a while. Then a third person comes on stage.... you get the idea. According to the program the play is making some kind of statement about miscommunication. Works for me. The miscommunication couldn't have been more complete. YMMV.

There was a large and apparently appreciative audience still sitting there when I slunk out the door, so I dont feel too guilty. But I am worried about the A/C, as I had planned to see a couple more shows at Bryant Lake, starting with FOOL FOR A CLIENT at 2pm. If it's going to be a dew point of 80 in the theater, I think I'll make other plans.

Dave, if you did make it to the show, I'll be interested to see what you think.

At the moment, my plans for the day are:

2:00 FOOL FOR A CLIENT
4:00
The Virginity of Astronauts @ Intermedia Arts
5:30 War of Worlds: The Musical - A Tribute to Old-Time Radio @ The Lab

and maybe one or two shows at nearby Jeune Lune, depending on what the weather's doing.

Sorry I missed you; I looked, and was in an obvious spot (I thought) for breakfast and on the line. Oh well. Yes, it was hot.

The beginning of elephant shoes was weak, it's true. The pacing was very slow to start and the routine tried to make light of the half-duplex communication system of a tin can telephone and went on too long. It got better, but never got great. You would have enjoyed watching them scale a firewall. See my review.
