This one sounded so good. The writer is from the group that produced the excellent Mortem Capiendum, the theme sounded like philosophical s.f., and the reviews were breathlessly adoring. But honestly, it just wasn't very good. A single performer does a series of sketches involving 3 people that seem to have nothing whatsoever to do with each other; and it turns out that they really DON'T have anything to do with each other. All 3 story lines are dismally depressing and ultimately unresolved. The performer is okay, but kind of hit the same emotional note with all the characters (jittery, angry and sad). Except for the 2nd grader who was just jittery, and did not convincingly evoke a child persona. Disappointing.

Dixie was so nice, but her show was so awful. We chatted with her in Fringe Central and I wanted to see her show because she was so outgoing and friendly. It's a one-woman show with dance, spoken word, and baton twirling around that perennial performance art topic "women's body image." Unfortunately, Dixie really had nothing to say on the topic that hasn't been beaten into the ground already. Even more unfortunately, she injured her hip in the first show but decided to hope for the best and perform anyway. That didn't work out - she hurt her hip again and ended up DESCRIBING parts of the dance routines she would have been doing if she weren't injured. Kudos to her for boldly performing a nude dance (startling because she is quite a large woman). This might have been empowering to other large women if she hadn't been in pain, making her movements clumsy and hard to watch. Honestly, it wouldn't have been a very good show without the injury, and under the circumstances it was just painful to watch. The first act featured the one thing she is really good at - baton twirling - and was quite entertaining. If she had incorporated twirling into the later dances and skits it would have been a whole lot better.
