Copy this sentence into your livejournal if you're in a heterosexual marriage (or if you might like to be someday), and you don't want it "protected" by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow.

 I've been married to an opposite-sex individual for something like 30 years and don't feel threatened by the possibility of gay marriage.

I can see how some people might be, though. If the only reason that you (or your spouse) entered into a heterosexual marriage was because you weren't allowed to do what you really WANTED to do (marry somebody of your own sex), I can see how allowing gay marriage might threaten your marriage. However, preserving sham marriages based on people pretending to be straight is not a high priority for me.

I don't see why someone who wanted to marry gay would stay in a hetero marriage even without the option of gay marriages. It's too easy to live together outside of marriage.

The people who raise this concern typically feel that living together outside of marriage is a mortal sin. Or at the very least, so unacceptable within their own families/communities that it is off limits for them.
