Sometime during "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" I decided that I wasn't going to see any more movies for the rest of the summer (possibly even the rest of my life) that involved large explosions. This drastically limited my summer movie possibilities, of course. We saw Whalerider - a trifle slow, but emotionally moving and generally worth the money (and absolutely nothing blew up, although a few stranded whales thrashed around a bit). We saw "Nowhere in Africa," which I thought was excellent; Richard seemed to be a little less sure. Despite the fact it was set during WWII, I don't think there were any explosions, or even any gunfire. Remarkable achievement, that. I vacillated for a long time about "Pirates of the Carribean" and finally decided at the last minute to join Richard and Thorin. I'm very glad I did - it's a delightful movie, despite a lot of cannons going off. Last night we saw "Seabiscuit," which had no explosions of any kind, and was also excellent for other reasons.
