Sometime during "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" I decided that I wasn't going to see any more movies for the rest of the summer (possibly even the rest of my life) that involved large explosions. This drastically limited my summer movie possibilities, of course. We saw Whalerider - a trifle slow, but emotionally moving and generally worth the money (and absolutely nothing blew up, although a few stranded whales thrashed around a bit). We saw "Nowhere in Africa," which I thought was excellent; Richard seemed to be a little less sure. Despite the fact it was set during WWII, I don't think there were any explosions, or even any gunfire. Remarkable achievement, that. I vacillated for a long time about "Pirates of the Carribean" and finally decided at the last minute to join Richard and Thorin. I'm very glad I did - it's a delightful movie, despite a lot of cannons going off. Last night we saw "Seabiscuit," which had no explosions of any kind, and was also excellent for other reasons.

I'm still wanting to see 'Pirates' and 'Seabiscuit.' I hope they stick around a little longer. I'm glad you enjoyed Pirates despite the cannons.

I strongly urge you to avoid "Bad Boys II," which consists of little else--except for car chases.

It does, however, have one absolutely hilarious scene in a form of humor that I have always liked--one person or group is talking about something that another person or group hears in an entirely different context.

Oh, yeah, we also saw "I Capture the Castle," a charming little British flick that reminded me so much of Cold Comfort Farm that I was convinced the original books must have been written by the same author. They weren't.

I have the same feeling about violent movies.

I don't object to violence, per se. One of my alltime favorite movies is "The Usual Suspects," and I was greatly taken with "The Gangs of New York," although I thought the latter was more violent than it needed to be to make its point. I just get bored with extended action sequences and repetitive special effects.
