Richard and I took advantage of the lovely weather yesterday and biked crosstown to Minnehaha Falls. Had a little trouble along the way getting my new bike seat adjusted properly (and was still feeling a little under the weather from the cold I just got over), so we (meaning I) decided not to head downriver, but just head home. Being worn out, I insisted on leading us back home through the streets instead of retracing our path along the creek. As we cruised down 40th Street heading for the pedestrian bridge, we heard a frenzied shout from behind. Turned around and there was this big young guy with spiky hair bounding out of his yard hollering, "Richard!!" He looked like he'd seen a ghost - actually scared me for a second. He kept saying, "I just put down the phone, I swear to God I JUST put down the phone, I mean seconds ago, I just left you a message..." Turns out he's a concert promoter that has gotten light show gigs for Richard in the past, and he had indeed just left us a phone message about a possible show. Walked out the door, and there's Richard, unmistakeable with his tie-dyed Santa Claus look, riding past on his bike. Oh, wow, man!

Looking around the house for something to sell (out of work, y'know), I can't help but notice the 60-odd boxes of mostly old comic books. Hey, didn't Richard promise to sell his collection one day when the kids were ready for college? Sure, he made that promise when the kids were in diapers, never really believing that time would march on like it has. But the kids are pretty much out of college and we are (not entirely coincidentally) pretty much out of money. So what better time, right? Ignoring the whimpers and pleading looks from the comics collector himself I started looking up stuff on the Internet and concluded that some of these things really are worth money, even in their rather unimpressive state of preservation. After reading up on the grading standards and looking at lots of scanned in comic book covers on Ebay, I think the Silver Age stuff ranges from VG- to at least FN, maybe a little better in some instances.

Anybody have any advice on selling vintage comics? Is it better to sell them as a complete collection, in small consecutive runs (e.g., Hulk #1-10) or as individual issues? And if anybody local has any experience actually grading comics, would you be willing to look at a few of the comics and help us appraise the grade?
