That new Harry Potter book is sitting on our dining room table. I certainly had nothing to do with it. If I have correctly (if accidentally) tuned into the cultural zeitgeist, obtaining this thing on the day of release has some kind of cult value requiring standing in line at midnight, and so forth. Last night, right? Richard must have done this, but when? He's been at the Minnstf picnic since shortly after he got up this afternoon. Of course, wandering around in the middle of the night would be easy enough for Richard to do, since he's up most of the night anyway.

On my way to the picnic I stopped at the (blessedly air-conditioned!) local hardware store to buy four new windowshades for our bedroom. The only one that still had a working spring was the one with the half-shredded shade. I was pleased to discover that the store still provides the service of cutting window shades to size, less pleased to discover on getting them home that two of them had been cut almost an inch too narrow, despite the fact that I brought the old shade along for comparison. Feh. I pulled out the extensible end to its maximum limit, and that made them barely long enough to hold in place. So I guess that will do. Now if only some of the windows still had sash weights. The last intact sash-weight cord snapped dramatically a few days ago. Replacing sash weights in that room is a major job - one I've been putting off since we moved in here 20 years ago.

I must confess that it was hard to leave the hardware store and head for a picnic on scorched grass in 95-degree heat. I did so, however, feeling it as sort of a family obligation. Thanks to the people who worked hard to organize it. It's nice to have an outdoor venue for a change, just for variety. But 2-3 hours was as long as I could really manage to enjoy it. The turnout was pretty good, considering the inhospitability of the weather. I think 22 people had signed in when I left at 6pm. Thanks to all the people who brought fruit and to Becca for the big vat of iced tea (which was still pretty cold at 5:30). Kudos to the folks with the party spirit to strike up a croquet game in the scorching sun, and even to enjoy it as far as I could tell.
