Maho Bay, east side reef. Maho Bay, east side reef.

This is the closest beach to Creolla. Actually, this is a picture of the reef on the east side. Imagine your usual white coral sand beach stretching off behind the photographer. We got here at about 5:30 and had a magical sunset snorkel (yes, the sun really does set before 7pm!). Much nicer than the Salt Pond expedition earlier - calmer water, fewer rocks, better viewing and no long hot walk!

He's following an enormous school of shiny little neon fry, the basis for the non-coral-based food chain in these parts.

They're following that huge school of bait fish too.

They can do this all day.

It's hard to capture the magic of swimming through a cloud of these little fish with a still picture, but here's my best effort.

I don't understand why some of my underwater pictures have that strange reflection, but in this picture it looks kind of cool.

Reading about your vacation is wonderful! Thanks for posting all of this. That cloud of neon fry is amazing -- I can't imagine swimming through them. Good thing your teeth are clamped on your snorkel, or you might be feeding on them like krill!

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm never sure if this sort of thing is appreciated or just creates a nuisance with all the pictures. I can't seem to get lj-cuts to work when I include tables of pictures.

Thanks! I like seeing the pictures of your trip - the underwater shots are very cool! If you're worried that some people might not appreciate them as much you can always show one as a teaser and put the rest behind a cut tag.

As I said above, I cannot get cut tags to work with included pictures.

Oh, that sounds lovely (aside from American Airlines).
