Gorgeous sunset
Jul. 23rd, 2004 11:29 amWednesday night, R and I went out for dinner and a movie (Machu Pichu and Spiderman2). We had about 15 minutes to kill in the Lyn-Lake area before heading out to the movie, which we spent gawking at the sky. A rain squall had passed through while we were inside, and we emerged to glistening streets and all the buildings highlighted with the most amazing greenish/pink hue as the thunderheads rolled away to the east. Meanwhile, the western and northern skies were unfurling scenic cloud designs that looked like painted backdrops from a movie or a Max Parrish painting, all in very metallic golden hues. There was not even a hint of orange - just gold and silver, and as the sun sank lower a little bit of pink. The cloud configuration was changing by the minute. Now a starburst of heavenly rays leaping up from a puffy pillow of gold, now a volcano-shaped cloud mass with streamers coming out of the top. We had to keep moving up and down the block to catch all the different displays behind the various buildings.
Weirdly enough, while we were scurrying back and forth pointing and gawking, people were walking by paying no attention at all, eyes straight ahead. It's hard to believe that anybody could have failed to notice what was going on in the sky!
The movie was good, btw, but the sky show was better.
