I opened my property tax statement for 2011. Our taxes are going up $50/month! That's 17% in one year.

Ours go up 13.7%, at least here. I haven't see the other news yet.

Also, our assessed value is way more than I think we'll get for the house when we sell it.

I wonder if we can sue for part of our taxes back when we actually sell, on the theory that we've just proved that the house was never worth what the county claimed it was.

I don't think so, but you can appeal the assessment. We actually did that one year and successfully got the assessed value lowered substantially. Of course if you get your assessed market value lowered that pretty much guarantees that you won't be able to sell for a higher price than that.
