Richard has got it into his head that the appropriate thing for him to wear to his daughter's wedding is a tie-dyed suit. He checked with his favorite tie-dye source, Twisted Groove. Sadly, they do not have any tie-dyed formal wear in stock. But if Richard can come up with a white suit in 100% linen or cotton in the next week to 10 days, Mr. Twisted Groove can dye it for him.

So... any ideas on where to buy a white linen or cotton suit?

This might be close to what you're looking for, or Amazon might have something better.

Here's a place that sells a white cotton/linen blend suit.

Also, tux rental places often sell off suits at huge discounts as they rotate their stock. Probably mostly poly, but could be worth calling around and asking.

And there's this set, which I wouldn't recommend because there is no sizing listed, but it looks classy and you get the idea. There are many talented tailors and costumers in our little corner of the universe. Someone local may sell, or be able to make something like this.

Suit or tux?

But...not to stifle anyone's personal expression, (if your daughter and her husband to be are ok with this, not my business) but since weddings aren't about the father of the bride, would a more limited form of achieving that sense be a tiedye shirt or tie or vest or cummerbund and tie under a more conventional suit?

As an ordinary guest, it would be one thing, but the focus of the wedding should be the bride and groom and a dramatic statement by the FOB is giving me minor qualms. If the bride and groom like the idea, then I think it would be wonderful.

The other question is what you wear to go with it?

(I do think the idea is cool, and if my dad were still alive and I showed him the idea he would have probably wanted one. My dad owned two green tuxedos for St Patrick's day wear, and some astonishing amount of formal wear incorporating the maroon and gold of the Washington Redskins.)

Bride's fine with it - after all, Dad is doing the psychedelic light show for the reception (at her request). I was a little surprised that she wanted that, but she says a wedding without a light show just wouldn't express her family traditions properly. And a father that wasn't drenched in tie-dye wouldn't be her Daddy.

I gave up a long time ago trying to dress in a way that would go with Richard's idea of dressing up. Fortunately it's not the kind of wedding where people have to match. :-)

Gosh, I never thought of you and Richard trying to 'match' anyhow, but you both dress in such wonderful, distinctive, counterculture ways. I love both of your styles!

I'm also delighted to hear that Richard will be doing a light show, and especially that Amber requested it! I'm so looking forward to this wedding, which is saying a lot, because mostly I don't like weddings very much. But I do love you and your family!

I am particularly happy that (I presume) she has found someone who appreciates, or at least does not not-appreciate, her family traditions.

Olin is a great guy with many fannish attributes, although not explicitly an SF fan. When we were last out there he was very eager to introduce his de facto best man and childhood friend to Richard as they are both big time gamers. This was such a sweet thought - this will give them a head start for socializing at the wedding. Sure enough, Richard and Robert hit it off. Olin's family is not fannish, but eccentric in their own way. It was actually Olin's mother that suggested the tie-dyed tux look for Richard. I have no idea what she is going to wear. I have never seen her in anything but pants. But no matter what, she will have the perfect shoes.

I think Richard in a tie-dyed tuxedo is a splendid idea. I mean, what else?
