People keep asking if I have pictures, and I really don't. When everybody else was taking pictures we were either posing or watching the ceremony. So here's a few that I blatantly "borrowed" from Amber's friends' online galleries (thanks, Ara and Karen! Hope you don't mind.)

Wedding Rehearsal with view from Mt. Tam Wedding Rehearsal with view from Mt. Tam When Amber told me she was getting married in a parking lot I was a little surprised. Turns out that it's not your typical parking lot.

The bride gets her hair done The bride gets her hair done The stylist is one of Amber's many talented friends - I think her name is Iris. The "salon" is the back room of the reception hall, a building with many handy nooks and crannies.
Walking down the (imaginary) aisle Walking down the (imaginary) aisle Surprisingly, Amber wanted her Daddy to walk her down the aisle, even though the wedding was outside so there wasn't much of an aisle. The resplendent tie-dyed suit was part of the bride's request, although the original idea reportedly came from the mother of the groom.

The Ceremony The Ceremony They decided not to have a formal wedding party. So Robert, Olin's not-a-best-man, read a poem he wrote for the occasion.
The reading of the vows The reading of the vows The wedding was officiated by Dusty, one of those stalwart Universal Life Ministers that often turn up at non-religious wedding ceremonies. He did a fantastic job, sometimes glowing almost as much as the bride and groom. That's a little bit of me in the lower right-hand corner.

Of course you're welcome to use those pictures -- that's what they're for!

But the photo credit should go to Mike, who worked very hard to edit them down and make them available before he had to leave on a trip. The only pictures I took were those few I posted to my LJ already.

Actually, these particular pictures were taken by a different Karen. I know that I will totally appreciate Mike's pictures when I download them (which I haven't done yet because I just came back from Minicon and am still half dead). I had already uploaded this set to LJ before the con, and had just enough energy to actually post them today.

I knew these weren't mine, but they're ones I *would have been proud to have taken* if I hadn't been taking others. Among these and the official photos and mine and other peoples' pictures, this wedding is, as we say, well covered. Congratulations, Amber and Olin, your wedding can never be lost.

I'm in Alexandria, VA, at the moment, and I've just been scanning about 600 family photos. And numerous as these are, they're just a drop in the bucket compared to our mental images of what was happening when. I know my Dad took pictures at my high school graduation, because they're firmly in my memory. But I haven't found them here. (I can't ask my Dad where they are, and my Mom doesn't know.)

I'm glad my parents generally wrote the date, and identified the people if they weren't obvious family members. Now...what do I do with them? What do I do with a linear sequential history of my development from one month to ten years?

What will people do with the thousands of digital photos we're taking now? No part of our lives will go undocumented. I know what my answer was at the wedding: if you see it, photograph it. Enjoy!

[livejournal.com profile] magscanner, I am quite interested in your workflow. What scanner settings did you decide on and how did you decide? What is your back up strategy? Do you ever destroy originals of images that were not digital to begin with?

Feel free to e-mail me or post to your own LJ if you don't want to hijack [livejournal.com profile] dreamshark's LJ for this.

I scan with NO scanner pre-filtering, 600 dpi 24-bit color (including for b&w), NO sharpening or contrast enhancement or any of that stuff, and later optimize each photo individually in Photoshop. Scan four to ten photos at a time and save the Multiscan images (each about 100 MB) onto two different backup HD's. NEVER EVER DESTROY THE ORIGINALS; I am not a Library; I am much more conscientious than that.

I figured it was fair to write things here, as dreamshark and I have had some discussions on these topics.
