Flash Forward. It's a science fiction t.v. series from 2009. I'd never heard of it before, just took a peek 'cause it was available streaming. I admit that I had my doubts when it started with n overlong and minimally explained car chase, but by the end of episode 1 I was hooked. I was muttering incredulously to myself, "Where did this come from? It's genuine science fiction!" when the credits rolled by and I saw Rob Sawyer's name. Who knew? I snuck away from the Minnstf meeting last night to watch the 2nd ep, and I'm seriously tempted to go up to the attic and watch another one right now. I'm not sure how they'll spin this story out for a full 22 episodes, but they're doing well so far.

It's very loosely based on his book of the same title. I must say that I found it rather disappointing. And season finale isn't an ending so much as a cliffhanger -- most of the ongoing storylines get dealt with, but then the show introduces a great honking new thing.

And then it was canceled.

I'd recommend reading the book instead.

I posted about this show when it first came out; I'm a big fan of Sawyer's work - I was a little disappointed because it was too different from the book, which took place at CERN mostly and had a broader, more international feel.

I rarely like movie/tv adaptations of books if I read the book first.

However, if I like the movie/tv version enough to read the book too, I usually enjoy both.

I had absolutely no expectations about the TV show, and I'm enjoying the way it introduces the mystery a bit at a time while exploring the very different ways people are affected by seeing a tiny glimpse of their own future.

I really don't see how there is enough of a story here to sustain 23 episodes, however. I'm not surprised it got cancelled. TV projects based on a very specific mystery should be implemented as limited mini-series in the BBC tradition, not spun out into an open-ended series.

Yes; I do better at liking adaptations if I see them before reading the book - and this would have done much better as a mini-series.
