Turns out anesthesiologists are not big fans of facial hair. When we met ours yesterday the first thing he said was, "How attached are you to that beard?" So last night the beard came off. I had never seen my husband without a beard. It is kind of surreal to hear his voice coming from a stranger's face.

Without the shirt and hat, he looks like Curly Howard or (someone else who's name escapes me at the moment).

Still, this will give him the opportunity to explore other facial hair. Sideburns. Goatee. Handlebar mustache.

I have no doubt he'll get back to the full beard eventually, but hair is fun to play with as it grows back.

The picture displayed on my phone in a slow reveal. The hat, that's Richard. The eyes, that's Richard. The nose, that's Richard. The mouth and chin -- whoa!!

Hope he enjoys his new look!

Does he look like one of the Tatge men moreso without the beard?

My husband has a very prominant proboscis. I have never seen him without his mustache. Still can't picture what he'd look like without it. He's considering Uncle Fester as a Halloween costume, but remarked he'd have to shave it. Could have knocked me over with a feather.

Big difference!

Dunno what all the anesthesiologists worry about with beards, but one obvious issue is getting masks to seal well. And I think that only comes up when three things have gone wrong anyway, and they're kind of low on options.

Oh, my!

[livejournal.com profile] skylarker is right; he's the Skipper.

He looks great, but, yes, the change is as dramatic as when [livejournal.com profile] jbru shaved and had his iconic braid cut off.

Oh my GOSH!

It's funny, but (except for the aid of the shirt, of course) I'm not sure I would have immediately recognized him.

When my Dad had some very similar surgery earlier this year (at the same hospital!) I had the same experience. It's amazingly strange.

Glad he is doing well. My thoughts are with both of you!

Freaky.

My Dad has had a crew cut since he was a kid; my Mom used to say she didn't know what color his hair really was given it's kinda hard to tell when there's so little of it. She doesn't say that anymore because it's clearly gray now.

I was glad to hear Richard is doing well and that the surgery went as well as these things can go.
