Inside Flour City
Oct. 24th, 2011 02:50 pmUnfortunately I only got to see a limited portion of the Vine Arts Center (née Flour City Ornamental Iron Works). It wasn't all that interesting: just lots of dreary grey hallway with incongruously pretty little studios and galleries opening off it. I would like to see what they did with the foundry area.

Has anyone tried iPhone app on IOS5?
Oct. 24th, 2011 02:36 pmWhen I try posting a picture to LJ with this app, it crashes to the desktop. This post is a test to see if pure text posts correctly.

Oh, never mind. I was using an old version of ljapp. The new version works just fine (see next entry). Can you see the loon?
Oct. 16th, 2011 06:42 pmHave you gotten a new MN drivers license recently? If so, can you see the floating loon?

From my "high points of the day" journal:
10:38 AM shopping for groceries at Costco. Sometimes we forget what a joyous luxury it is to walk into a store hungry and simply pick up everything that looks good. Add in the discount warehouse perception that you are saving massive amounts of money with every purchase, and you have real shopping bliss. For once I appreciated having the game party at home so I had an excuse to buy that giant pumpkin pie (only $5.99!).
[But now we are faced with the obligation to eat a roast chicken, 2 pounds of mozzarella cheese, a huge box of strawberries, and about 4 quarts of broccoli florets before they go bad. What was I thinking?]

So far so good- no explosions
Sep. 11th, 2011 02:49 pmJust hanging around this afternoon enjoying lovely weather in backyard, walking to Kingfield Market, and recovering from an ambitious bike ride yesterday. Not sure how I feel about all the 9-11 anniversary thing except that the more over the top the hype gets the more likely it seems to spawn an anniversary atrocity or two. I keep nervously checking my news feeds, relieved to see nothing worse than yesterday's rumors and warnings. I'll be glad when the day is over.

Fringe Day 1, Take 2 (Saturday)
Aug. 7th, 2011 11:04 amSecond time's the charm: a very successful first day. Saw 4 shows, all excellent. In retrospect I realize that the mix was a little heavy on boisterous physical comedy for my taste. Every show we saw was absolutely worth seeing, but it might have been a better idea to go with the original plan for the day instead of impulsively swapping in the Seven Samurai show at the last minute. Other than that, a practically perfect day of Fringing.

Actually it's about 1:15, but it's as dark outside as if the sun had been down for an hour. Holy cow!

Circus Juventas - "Grimm"
Jul. 31st, 2011 08:17 pmFun but a little on the slow side. It's student performances after all, at a circus school that prides itself on being a non-competitive, self esteem building experience. So there were a handful of astonishing performances, maybe 10-20 very good ones and dozens of kids just dancing around in beautiful costumes.
I think my favorite events were the drapery dancing, the rolling wheels and the trapeze work. My favorite performers were Snow White and the guy that jumped rope in a pushup position. Best costumes: the giant and the little frog prince that sat on his shoulder.
The best picture I managed to take was the tightrope walkers. They were very skilled, but I never could figure out what they had to do with Rapunzel.

All grown up now
Jul. 24th, 2011 11:47 amJust a few short years ago little Kingfield Farmers Market was nothing but an empty lot with a few people selling potted flowers and homemade jam. Now look at it!

My Internet is down! And this time it's not my crappy router: it is Qwest. This NEVER happens. Did a Central Office explide from the heat or something? Any other DSL customers offline?
Fortunately Olin was here with his portable hot spot. But he was about to leave for the airport so I used his Internet access to buy myself another $15 worth of 3G for my phone.

On the mend again
Jun. 27th, 2011 07:52 pmRealizing that my last entry ended on a bit of a cliff-hanger, I thought I would post a quick update on the wireless network that the hospital so thoughtfully provides. R is on the mend again, much better than when I saw him last. Still having some trouble expanding his lungs completely, but he doesn't need the biPAC now. They had him up in a chair again today, doing a few simple PT exercises. Talking is still an effort, but Thorin has him talking about games right now and he is talking more fluently than I've heard since the surgery.
Unless he has another setback he should be off the ICU again tomorrow.

Operation was a success
Jun. 24th, 2011 04:16 pmAnd yes, the patient lived. I haven't seen him yet, but have talked to the surgeon. There were no surprises, which is generally desirable where surgery is concerned. As planned, he bypassed 2 arteries.
And he was able to get all the raw materials he needed without going into the leg, which is apparently the best scenario. One length of artery came from the left forearm, the other from a non-essential artery inside the chest cavity (who knew there were spare parts just lying around in there?).
I have been hanging around for about 40 minutes waiting for somebody to come get me and lead me to my husband. I think it's time to go out and find him. This is an excellent hospital and the procedure seems to have gone perfectly smoothly, but from the spectator point of view the scene transitions need some work.

Who is this guy??
Jun. 24th, 2011 06:18 amTurns out anesthesiologists are not big fans of facial hair. When we met ours yesterday the first thing he said was, "How attached are you to that beard?" So last night the beard came off. I had never seen my husband without a beard. It is kind of surreal to hear his voice coming from a stranger's face.

So hip it hurts
Jun. 19th, 2011 06:27 pmThat's Uptown on a summer Sunday afternoon. Rag Stock still had some cheap striped socks, although not the same colors as last fall. There's an Apple Store on Hennepin now. Walking in there is like walking onto the set of "Gattaca". Now I'm at Lake Harriet listening to some band apparently named TicketstoBrazil.com.

ETA: so what is up with that goofy location? I posted this entry from the bike path right outside the Lake Harriet bandshell, which was in Minneapolis last time I looked. Olinger Road does exist and really is in Edina; according to Google maps it is almost 6 miles from the Lake Harriet Bandshell!Lakewood Chapel open today
May. 28th, 2011 03:57 pmRichard and I biked over to see what was going on. Yes, the gates are open, as is the chapel and other buildings. The special events, including guided chapel tours, are scheduled for Monday. But if you just want to see the inside of the chapel tomorrow might be the best time. On Monday there is going to be a concert in the chapel, time unclear.
In other news: holy crap! One short consult of Google Earth uses 4MB? Egad. Maybe this prepaid data plan idea isn't worth doing after all.

Hey, I can post from my iTouch
Feb. 28th, 2010 11:02 amWeekend starting late due to a lost day at my DFL district convention. I was mostly there to caucus AGAINST Ryback. Attending yr district convention is like multiplying yr vote by 1,000 so it can be worth doing. I started out caucusing for Entenza, but he was totally unviable so I joined the Crowd in the Gym for Kelliher. I got to talk to the candidate for a couple of minutes and to vote for Joan Growe as a delegate to the next level. Better yet, minnehahaK was there so we got to hang out in the hall for an hour or so while 60B chose between Green and Hat to replace Kelliher in the state legislature.
So anyway I'm now just getting around to my usual lazy start to the weekend, drinking coffee, reading the paper, listening to music, making lists of things I mostly won't get around todoing.
