Starting his 3rd day in Transitional Care, Richard is finally starting to seem more like a slightly grumpy normal sick person instead of a pathetic invalid. He's complaining about the food (as opposed to simply looking for the easiest thing to chew and swallow), channel-surfing (instead of just staring placidly at the nature slides on the soothing music channel) and wondering when he can get out of here (instead of waiting helplessly for someone to take care of him). This is all good news. He's really on the mend now. But not ready to go home, no matter what he thinks. He's now able to walk down to the common area and onto the outdoor 2nd-floor terrace, but still needs to call an aide to help him get his walker out from behind the wheelchair and hook up the little portable oxygen tank. He can carry on a conversation and read a little, but still gets sleepy after half an hour or so of doing anything. But he is making great strides.

Anyway, visitors are starting to sound good to him now. He says he still isn't ready for long visits or game playing, but I think he would like for people to stop by. In a few days I wouldn't be surprised if he was ready for gaming and larger groups.

He's at Walker Methodist, 3737 Bryant Avenue. Just stop at the front desk and they'll tell you how to find him.

Yay!

Terry, are you still a gardening person? Would you be willing/able to help keep an eye on Richard's flowers? Thorin is mowing the lawn and such, but he's not really a gardener (nor am I), and I'm afraid Richard will not be happy at how his flowers look when he finally gets home.

If you think you can help, just ask Richard when you stop in to visit whether there is anything he would like help with. If you can help, thanks!

He mentioned being concerned whether the flowers along the walk at the side of the house were getting watered.

I stopped by for a little while this afternoon and he did seem in reasonably good spirits and his hand shake was much stronger than his voice.

I only stayed about fifteen/twenty minutes before he started to seem tired, but he did seem very glad for the distraction when I showed up.

Carole and I left him some colored pens and blank paper when we visited the hospital. I hope he's up to a little doodling. We may drop by if we ever recover from Convergence.
