It was a lovely fall day and Richard is finally allowed to bike again, so we headed to Cannon Falls for our first out-of-town bike trip of the season. Rode to Welch and back (21 miles) with no particular difficulty for either of us except a little complaining about sore posteriors. It was a very nice outing, although the fall foliage seems to be in shrivel-up-and-fall-off mode this year instead of turning pretty colors first. It's hard to believe after the monsoons of June, but I guess it's been too dry for the last month or so. Huh. Hard to keep track of which weather catastrophe we are experiencing. Apparently now it is drought. Still, the trail was smooth and dry, and all the trail fee collection stations were closed for the season, so... SCORE!

We stopped at a nearby orchard to buy apples for juicing, but were a bit disappointed at the prices, which seemed high. We were hoping to get knowledgeable advice on what variety was best for juicing, but wouldn't even have gotten that if the orchard owner hadn't wandered by; the young lady working the counter was clueless. The owner did turn up, however, and recommended Haralson as a fairly tart apple that is also a very good keeper. So we bought a 5-pound bag for $7 and a couple of pounds of Honeycrisp at something like $2.49/pound(!). Stopped at Cub on the way home to pick up a roast chicken and discovered that we could have bought Honeycrisp for $.20 less per pound, and a bag of Cortlands for something like $5. Oh well. The Haralsons are probably a little better for juicing than Cortlands. And we are supporting local horticulture.

On Sunday, Richard got up and went to the Renaissance Festival. I decided to stay home and relax instead. I think that I am permanently tired of the RenFest. My desire to visit the State Fair gradually regenerates after a couple of years away from it, but RenFest never gets more appealing. So I went to the Kingfield Farmers Market instead and had a lovely time. The wonderful Roe Family Singers were there again (musical saw player and all) so I bought a copy of their other CD and then sat down and listened until they folded up at 1pm. Didn't do much after that except clean the kitchen, wash produce, boil chicken bones for broth and that sort of thing. Sat in the backyard swing for a long time playing iPhone games and listening to podcasts on the blue shuffle I got from Thorin. Kind of wasting time and kind of not - I was at least enjoying the lovely weather. Went inside and played a lot of Boggle on the iPad (no excuse for that one). Remade some earrings. Made a nice dinner for Richard, only to find out that he had eaten a turkey leg right before leaving Festival and wasn't hungry. Grmphh. Watched an episode of "30 Rock" and a little bit of the "Mad Men" pilot, and went to bed.

I'm glad to hear that Richard's up to biking again, and it sounds like you had great weather for it. They're predicting rain so maybe the drought's over for now.

I *love* Haralson apples! But I can only get them when I visit Minnesota. They should make great juice. Are you still eating vegan?

"Are you still eating vegan?"

No, I only lasted 5 days on that regimen. But we're trying to have more meatless meals and one veggie/apple juice every day. I continue to believe that the best way to eat vegetarian recipes is with just a little meat added. Richard made an absolutely delicious soup last night, starting with the chicken-bone/vegetable/basil broth I made, adding spinach tortellini, onions, fresh tomatoes from the Farmers Market, and just a little bit of pork. That's my idea of healthy home cooking.

I hadn't realized that Haralson was a Minnesota apple, but I looked it up on Wikipedia and sure enough, it is.

Taaaaaaart! We had some Prairie Spys and Regents last week that were just to the left of Haralsons. Both excellent, but a bit much when expecting a sweeter apple.
