Caucus commentary

For the record, southwest Minneapolis does have a few Republicans, and they went resoundingly for Ron Paul. But just like the rest of Minnesota, no love for Gingrich. According to the Patch, southwest Mpls managed to scare up over 300 Republicans for their caucuses, although an unknown number of them were bored DFL-ers who went to the Republican caucuses because there was nothing going on in theirs.

I did briefly consider doing the same thing, since I've always wondered if Minnesota Republicans are as earnest and disorganized as DFLers, but I really couldn't face the idea of spending an evening pretending to be a Republican. Although I am amused by barondave's idea of going to the Republican caucus and quoting Ronald Reagan all night.

I was startled by Santorum's resounding win state-wide, but now that I think it over I'm happy with the result. Much as I loathe Santorum, I'm delighted to see the Republicans in disarray. Santorum isn't very interesting, but if he can manage to keep the internecine carnage going a little longer I look forward to hearing what Gingrich has to say now that he has nothing to sustain his continued momentum but pure venom. And Pawlenty's utter failure at churning up some excitement for his new BFF (Romney) pretty much guarantees that he will be (again) out of the running for VP. I had been a little worried that T-Paw would end up on the ticket, resulting in Minnesota going red in November. And then I'd have to move to Vermont. But now it looks unlikely that he will be on the ballot. And if he is, given his record, it will just guarantee the state for Obama. So it's all good.

I was really curious about how many Democrats went to the Repub caucuses and voted for the funniest named candidate (surprisingly, not Mittens). I suspect that might be how he won.

Only slightly related, 2% or Americans think that Mitt Romney's first name is really Mittens, and I'm doing all I can to pass that rumor along.

The DFL precinct caucus I attended was quite well organized.

But almost certainly not as exciting as the Republican caucuses.

I didn't caucus because of family obligations, but I share the overall mirth at the Frothy Mix's big win.

It wasn't entirely clear in my post, but I didn't caucus either. Since there doesn't seem to be anything at all for the conventions to do this year, there is no point in being a delegate. But with the low turnout, it would be really hard to get in and out of a DFL caucus without ending up as a delegate, or worse, next year's precinct chair.
