I don't seem to be very good at this online diary thing. I'm not really keeping up my end in the collective time-wasting department. Will they revoke my password if I only post 3 times a year? We're done with that Big Hairy Audacious Project at work, and we're all sort of drifting a little waiting for the next crisis wind to blow. What better time to turn over a new leaf and discover my inner blogger? I'm trying (with limited success) to reinstall Linux on this broken down old lab PC in the corner of my office, so I can kill time online while actually doing something productive. Well, potentially, anyway. I'm actually on my 4th install attempt, and am kind of losing heart.

Elsewhere, I'm in the midst of a consumerist orgy: new computer, new cell phone, maybe even a new car if I don't lose my momentum. Spending money can be kind of exhausting *boo hoo*. I maybe got a little above myself with the computer. I discovered that for maybe 10% more than the cost of a boring old Dell, I could order an ultra-cool Alienware Gaming Machine with a molded purple case and glowing green eyes. (Follow this link if you wanna see what they look like. Bug-eyed Alienware) It showed up this past weekend, and I proceeded to spend about an hour trying to figure out how to turn the #^&@%* thing on. Since I am now a member of the club, I won't give away the secret. Let's just say that simply putting a latch on the outside of the little door on the front would clearly violate the Rule of Cool. We wouldn't want just ANYBODY to be able to operate our Gaming Machine, now would we?

Hey! Wouldja look at that! The installation completed this time! I guess my boss wasn't crazy when he told me to type fdisk /mbr to wipe out the Master Boot Record. He's pretty smart for a boss. :-)

It's cute! I can understand not wanting just anyone to be able to turn it on, but shouldn't a paying owner be given a clue or two?

Alienware clues

Well, they did give a clue or two in the setup chart, which is how I eventually figured it out. I was thinking that explicit instructions would've been nice, but maybe that proves that I'm not really a good enough gamer to deserve a machine like this.

Yes; explicit instructions: even better than clues.
Since you did, in fact, figure it out you are obviously qualified to own it. :)

I had to laugh at your problems with the Alien Gaming machine, ... thanks!
