Hooray! And yet, what about the underlying problem, the folks who voted for her? Democrats need to figure out how to reach out to the ones who aren't crazed bigots, but are just frightened by the changing world around them.
True, but at this point I'd be thrilled if the 6th District elected a Republican who wasn't a right-wing wingnut. I think that's about the best we can hope for in that district, which is a sincerely Republican kind of place.
On my drive home the day this was announced I was listening to MPR doing man-in-the-street interviews. They had clearly made an effort to select about an equal number on each side (glad/sad she's gone). But not a single one of the "glad" she's gone" people expressed disagreement with her positions on anything. No, they were mostly unhappy that she had spent so much time campaigning for president instead of paying attention to her district. One guy was quite insulted that she kept talking about her "Iowa roots" when she was campaigning in Iowa.
The closest to criticism of her actual views was the guy who said she wasn't a very good Republican because Republicans are supposed to be the sensible, rational party and Michele seemed to be more about "emotion and religion."
She barely got re-elected last time. I don't know the reasoning behind the people who didn't vote for her if they had voted for her before -- dreamshark touches on one possibility above -- but even her own district was very dubious about her by then.
I just hope she doesn't end up blathering all over Fox News or running for the Senate or something. I fear we aren't really done with her.
