I made a post in an online forum regarding the necessity of having moderators that are willing to "nip [trolling behavior] in the bud." This triggered an auto-censor that replaced "nip" with "**bleep**".  WTF?

Does "nip in the bud" have some filthy slang meaning that I wasn't aware of?

Maybe as in " a nip of whiskey"?? Not that I can see any half-reasonable point to bleep that out.

I'm probably showing my age, but I think it's the fact that "nip" was separated from "in the bud" and was therefore interpreted by the auto-censor as a derogatory label for someone from Japan.

Hey, it appears the Urban Dictionary has this definition, too. Maybe I'm not as old as I think I am.

This gives me my next idea I will never use: An automatic censor that would turn your statement into:

I made a post in an online forum regarding the necessity of having moderators that are willing to "smurf [trolling behavior] in the smurf."

I guess I'll throw that on the pile of ideas along with the Harry Potter themed cafe called Espresso Patronum.
