Lena learning to sit down
Feb. 21st, 2016 10:50 pmLearning to sit up by herself was her first big project. She mastered that nearly a year ago. Here she is at 5 months, sitting triumphantly upright in her Bumbo Seat. But of course at that age she had to be placed in the seat by some big person, and once there she couldn't get out.

Now at 15 months, she thinks it's pretty exciting when she encounters a toddler-sized chair that she can walk over to on her own and casually seat herself in. Here's a shot of her relaxing with a new friend in the play area of a local cafe, looking like a little old man on a park bench.
Unfortunately, her parents haven't gotten around to buying any more toddler furniture, so the only chair she has at home to practice on is that old Bumbo Seat, which is not particularly easy to sit down in. In today's Skype session we watched her trying to figure it out. How I wish we had a video of that! First she backed up towards the chair and tried to sit, but she'd approached at the wrong angle and kept sliding off the chair arm onto the floor. She got up and reoriented, looking back over her shoulder and backing up towards the seat straight on. Then she confidently plopped down - and landed on her bottom right in front of the chair. Got up again and stared perplexedly at the chair for a while, then thought of a different approach. Put one knee on the chair seat and corkscrewed sideways. It worked perfectly except that she ended up with one leg tucked up under her. She kept trying to free that leg, but the bumpout in the middle of the chair seat made it impossible, and she obviously didn't feel like standing up and trying again. Finally Daddy came over, picked her up, and reseated her. She then sat there proudly beaming at the camera and pumping her legs up and down (because sitting still just isn't in her nature).
