Two days ago a sneaky little Pokemon update that supposedly just fixed a couple of minor bugs (ha!) tweaked the base stats and Combat Power calculation of pretty much all the Pokemon. My beatiful double-grass Vileplume is nerfed. :-(   But my beloved Rhydon, FightQuake, is suddenly a beast! I have renamed him "SnorlaxKiller."
But wait, there's more!

The Thanksgiving Event started this evening: 7 days of double XP and Stardust!  But wait, there's more!

The new ingame tracking system went live at the same time. Not sure if it's an improvement or not, but it's different and will be fun to play with. But wait, there's more!

The elusive  Ditto Pokemon is now loose in the wild! I haven't seen it myself, but it's all over the Internets. It disguises itself as something harmless like a Pidgie or Rattata, but when you catch it, it transforms into a purple blob. Wow!

If only the real-life weather weren't drizzly half-frozen mess I'd be out there right now.

What is this in-game tracking system?  What does it do?  And how do I find out how the adjustments to my Pokés affect their combat worthiness.

Also, I would like to whine about the weather.

As usual, those scientists over at Reddit/Sylph Road have compiled ordered lists of the new "best Pokemon." https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/5e6qbb/new_max_cp_top_10/

Open up your tracker and look at it. It now says "Nearby" at the top instead of "Sightings." See those little circles? They are nearby PokeStops. If you click on one it will expand to a map view to show you where there Pokestop is. It shows recent spawns at all stops within about a quarter mile. This is cool. However, it no longer shows spawns nearby that are NOT at Pokestops. That is highly annoying if you are exactly 1/4 mile from the nearest Pokestop, as my house is. In fact, there are 7 Pokestops in a circle roughly 1/4 mile in diameter around my house. So I can see spawn that are on that circle, but not ones that are actually close. So... some good, some bad. It will be fun to investigate.

Eileen and I just did an Evolution-Fest at the 3-stop Coffee Shop. I leveled up to 26. But I did not catch a Ditto. I REALLY WANT A DITTO!!

Cool! I went for a long Pokewalk today. Caught a bunch of stuff, though not anything new.

I can't figure out when I ought to power up. Any words of advice? We should Skype sometime! I'd love to get more hints and tips from you.

Sure, let's Skype! Heck, we could do it over Thanksgiving weekend while we're visiting in Portland and you could say hi to Amber and Lena.

What level are you? I saw advice online that you should save your stardust until you hit Level 20 or higher because it is a scarce resource. After about L20 you will be catching and evolving monsters with much higher CP than the ones you were catching earlier. Powering up only gives you about 30 additional CP points (maybe less at lower levels. Not sure because I did wait until L20). So if you blow all your stardust leveling your first Vaporeon from CP 510 to 540 you will feel really stupid when you start catching CP 600 Evees later on. Sadly, you will eventually discard most of those critters that you were SO excited about when you were at Level 10 because you will never have enough Stardust to get them to a decent level for fighting.

Great idea! Would sometime tomorrow, Saturday, work for you? Maybe in the morning?

I'm level 24 and haven't done much powering up yet, though I've done a fair amount of evolving. I've started using the Advisor's assessment more to decide whether to keep, transfer, or evolve a Pokemon. I'm afraid I did evolve a few who the Advisor now assesses as 'Not likely to make much headway in battle'.

Do you have a position on Evees?
