I spoke too soon - this sucks

It looked like DW had imported all the pictures from my LJ account, but on closer scrutiny I see that it didn't do that at all - it just LINKS to the pictures on LJ. So if my old LJ account goes away, all my pictures are gone too. Boooo.

DW itself has practically no picture handling capability. They expect you to host your pictures somewhere else and link to them. There is some kind of limited photo-hosting capability, but you can only get to it... via email posting??? WTF?

ETA: I tried posting by email and it failed.

Oops. I typed the domain name wrong. It's dreamwidth.org.
Now it works, but it posted the picture in size ENORMOUS, even though I tried to send it as "best fit." I deleted that entry, and will try again.

Yeah; the email posting thing is weird. However, I can understand their not having much space for pictures -- they're running on a shoestring -- and it's easy for me to see why they can't import your pictures. It would interact badly with cross-posting, for one thing.

I could live with the email posting thing if it worked. It just fails for me.

After I started typing the dreamwidth domain name correctly, email posting did work. And it worked fine with cross-posting to LJ.

Disc space is cheap. Something else is behind that decision.

If you take their own comments at face value, it has nothing to do with disk space. They just haven't gotten around to implementing the functionality, vaguely intend to do so some day, but have no public timetable.

"Dreamwidth has a very basic image hosting service. All users, regardless of account type, can use it. At this time, the only way to upload an image is by using the post by email service. A web-based photo upload form will be implemented in the future."

They just got 87,000 new users; one hopes many have paid, and now they have the resources to get things done.
